Castle of the Order of St. John in Łagów

The castle of the Order of St. John was built on the hill between Trześniowskie and Łagowskie Lakes surrounded by a historic park with many natural monuments. The castle construction was started by the Order of St. John in 1350, in the place where elevations had already been set up earlier. A 12-meter high quadrilateral building was quickly erected, then the walls around the castle with ranges were built. At the beginning of the 16th century, by order of the present commander Liborius von Schapelow, a 24-meter tower was built. During the wars and the invasion of Swedes, the castle did not suffer much. In 1810, the castle became the property of Prussia, and then a private property.
Currently, the building consists of a structure built in the 17th century, four two-storey wings that form a Renaissance courtyard. Nowadays it is covered with a roof. The courtyard can be regarded as the castle’s heart and the cascade of grapevine gives it a fairytale charm. Above the castle there is a fortified tower, which can be seen from a distance of several kilometers. It is also a good observation point, available to visitors all year round. The entrance to the tower costs 5,00 PLN/person. The castle now houses a hotel and a restaurant. In the castle, there is a komtur’s chamber, an executioner’s chamber and a knights’ hall.
