UNESCO World Geopark Łuk Mużakowa is a tourist product in the "place-area" category
The Łuk Mużakowa is a geological structure that is unique in the world in the form of a piled up moraine, in the shape of an arc located on both sides of the Polish-German border. In 2009, the Polish part obtained the rank of national geopark. Since 2011, the whole area has been certified as a European Geopark and included in the World Geoparks Network. Since 2015, it has been the only site in Poland that can be proud of the rank of UNESCO World Geopark. There is a unique anthropogenic lake district, with over 100 reservoirs on the Polish side, the waters of which amaze with their variety of colors. The most valuable objects are accessible along the geotourist route "The Former Babin Mine,” and new objects are constantly being built. The jewel of the geopark is the unique Mużakowski Park in Łęknica and Bad Muskau. In combination with a network of bicycle paths, Nordic Walking and the possibility of rafting on the Nysa Łużycka River and attractions on the German side, this creates a coherent tourist product, with the possibility to ensure sightseeing and active recreation for several days.
UNESCO World Geopark Łuk Mużakowa provides a space for the development of many local initiatives carried out by both local governments and other institutions and organizations.
Since 2011, the entire area has been certified as a European Geopark and was included in the World Geoparks Network. Since 2015, as the only site in Poland, it can be proud of the rank of UNESCO World Geopark. In 201,9 the Mużakowski Agreement was established, bringing together various entities operating in the geopark.
Last year, the Master Plan for the Polish-German Geopark for 2018-2028 was developed, indicating the most important development directions for the coming years. In the near future, a Cultural and Educational Center of the UNESCO World Geopark will be established in Łęknica, in the building of a historic carpenter’s shop, where exhibitions and multimedia exhibitions, places for workshops, a cafe and a bike rental service will be located.
Work on the development of geotourist path, carried out by the Lipinki Forest District, is also in progress. Further on, there are plans to develop the tourist infrastructure in the vicinity of Trzebiel and Tuplice, where such structures as "Krzywy Las" or "Staw Kołkowy" will be exposed.
Both the World Geopark and the historic Mużakowski Park located in its centre in Łęknica and Bad Muskau have UNESCO designations, which is unique both in Poland and in the world. The Mużakowski Park is the biggest tourist attraction, widely known in Germany, visited by nearly 500 thousand people a year. However, a new attraction of this place is built by the Forest District Lipinki, geotouristic path "Former Babin Mine" leading among colorful lakes and geological curiosities, with beautiful views from a wooden observation tower. In combination with a network of bicycle paths and the possibility of rafting on the Nysa Łużycka River and attractions on the German side, this creates a coherent tourist product, with the possibility to ensure sightseeing and active recreation for several days.
