Fortified Region – Underground Tourist Routes

Międzyrzecz Fortified Region, built in the 1930s, is one of the most powerful systems of this type in Europe. The greatest attraction are the bunkers with armoured domes, connected by underground tunnels up to 40 meters deep and over 30 kilometers long. This priceless monument of 20th century fortifications can be visited in two places, the Museum of Fortifications and Bats in Pniewo and the Boryszyn Loop. These are year-round facilities, but in the autumn and winter visiting is limited due to the creation of the largest European bat sanctuary within the fortifications. Every year about 30,000 individuals of 12 species winter in the underground.
