Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre in Żagań

The building located next to the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a faithful copy of the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. There are only two such chapels in Europe: in Goerlitz in Germany and Żagań. On the initiative of the abbot of the Augustinian monastery in Żagań, Jakub II Liebig, construction work began in 1588, and was completed by Friedrich Tschauer in 1589. The chapel was made of sandstone, has a flat roof topped with a lantern tower with six columns. The inscriptions on walls show how quickly the tomb became a pilgrimage destination.
