The post-Augustinian complex – church, monastery, granary, convict and monastery library

Historically and artistically, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is certainly one of the most valuable churches in Lower Silesia. Old chroniclers assume that the temple was founded as early as in 1183. The monastery, apart from the monks’ cells and the chapterhouse, also houses St. Anna’s chapel with Gothic vaults and the magnificent monastery library with 18th century decor. In the library’s book collection there are fragments of the Bible from the 8th(!) The Poaugustinian Monastery in Żagań has gained the status of a Monument of History. The monastery square is closed by the old, late gothic monastery granary, which dates back to the end of the 15th century. It has Baroque paintings with astronomical motifs and a portrait of the famous astronomer, Johannes Kepler.
